Initially on a local level, there'd be disputes between different lords, almost in the way of warlords. And those coalesced into the great factions of Lancastrians supporting Henry VI and Yorkists who supported Richard Duke of York. The Yorkists won out with the accession of Edward IV. Mallory lived across those latest ages from the loss of the English lands in the Hundred Years War, and also the loss of Constantinople to Islam in 1453.
