The Origins of Courage
Hope is a really old word going back to Old English and earlier if it has related forms in other languages. It's that theological meaning that's the earliest one and not the seconder meaning. Now let's take a look at courage, which is a much later addition to the English language. Courage doesn't appear in English until about the 14th century - well into the Middle English period.
