The History of Pirates in China

The coastline of Southern China and Northern Vietnam seems almost to be made for piracy. In this sense, it's really not that surprising to run into three different periods when piracy was very common in this part of the world over the last 500 years. The first wave between 1522 and 1574 was partially caused by a curious policy promoted by the Ming Dynasty which placed severe limitation on sea trade. Most of the early pirates were merchants who did piracy as a side business.
