Data Modeling - The Basic Level
The first thing is data model adds context. And without context, the data has less value. So you'll probably have entity levels. You'll have domain level at the highest level. Domain could be your product domain and products linked to customers somehow. Then breaking that down to conceptual logical and then down to physical and business people think in as domain domain or at logical level. Technology people think at physical level. Being able to broker those two gaps of learning at what logically fits physically and how that physicalization changes over different technologies.
