Gin is just more interesting than vodka, so I don't see why anyone would ever want a vodka martini. Dryness has two slightly different, but very related connotations here. There's this macho feeling that the less vermouth you have, the better because the gin is what it's all about. The green olives just don't look good in the blue martini. A yellow twist of lemon peel looks great.
