There's this kind of implicit understanding that, you know, sometimes it's not pretty, but we got to do some rough stuff in order to take care of business. So when you take that into consideration, it's about the way that national identity is forged around the idea of these trade offs. And built into that notion is a kind of article of faith that we as americans mean, well, whatever we're doing in the world, we're doing it because we have to.
