Roosevelt's Triumph in the Depression

The size of Roosevelt's victory, nearly an electoral sweep, surprised one and all. In the weeks following the election, roosevelt essentially hid from public view. His enemies on the right began to use his absence to attack him. The criticisms became pointed and aggressive. But in his first months in office he switched from appearance of inactivity to a powerful offensive. He passed legislation that made the country feel as if something were finally being done.
