The Hippocampus Grid Cell
In the mid 2004, 2005, Edward and Mike Bred Moser's lab were trying to understand how does these place cells get their firing properties. They discovered this remarkable cell type called the grid cell. It's similar to a place cell in that it has very similar spatial firing properties but unlike a place cell which fires typically only in one location in an environment. Grid cells fire in many locations, so cell bycell when the rats hear, pop up Pop-up! The amazing thing about it was that these locations weren't random, they were arranged as in this triangular or hexagonal pattern. This is like little triangles that test the late space.
