The Assimilation of Whiteness
The utopian idea of cross racial understanding too often means the erasure of difference and assimilation into sameness. So while pan is carson's bridge to penetrate chinatown's defences, he wants to assimilate her into his image of whiteness. He betrays the confidences of pan and chinatown, stripping bare their secrets for the voeristic, white american audience in order to further his career. The poem also gives the short story the title its wavering image. It proposes agree not merely to the right to difference, but carrying this further, agree also to the right opacity.
