The first lady eleanor roosevelt later said it was a little terrifying how enthusiastic the crowd responded to the suggestion. Roosevelt really does sound like he's warming up to be an early twentieth century authoritarian dictator. Was he ever given dictatorial powers? Certainly not formally, though he did gain expansive authority. Some accused him of functioning like a dictator in particular. His 19 37 proposal to pack the supreme court with sympathetic judges led many of his critics to accuse him of tyranny, fachism and dictatorial action.
