The Unprecedented 4% Rule
The longevity of the 4% rule has been such a hot topic of debate in recent years, thanks to high inflation and low bond yields. I asked Bill if he thought that these times were truly unprecedented. He's concerned because there are two factors that in his research show the historically effective withdrawal rates. And quite frankly, if you look at January 2022 with a Shiller PE ratio being around 40 inflation approaching 8%. Those are two numbers that have never occurred in the data in the US before together.
