Orwell's Hope for Donkeys

Orwell was definitely an animal lover, and I think he would have seen the idea of atonement as probably a bit too religious. He upbraided himself in a way for not feeling as instinctively and instantly sort of sad and angry about the plight of human beings. For Orwell it was people that were suffering, not let's just feel sorry for them... but actually to honour their work and their hardship with action.
