A lot of these films that were made about saints before a certain time, avoid the sort of one note heavy handedness. The song of Bernadette is definitely that way. I think Passion of Joan of Arc still ranks quite high on that. Even people who are not Catholic acknowledge that that's kind of Malek's comeback.
