The Black Woman in the Eye of the Arena

I wanted a black woman to be right at the helm because she would be able to speak meaningfully through experience. And I also wanted her partner to be able to fully understand what she was going through through their own experience. Stax really became that person to fit that slot. But also she sort of became the soul, this person, the character who represented like that love despite overwhelming circumstances. and I think the book needed that.
