What Are the Major Uses of Hydrogen?

About 40 million tons a year of hydrogen is used to refine petroleum and desulphurize it. In future, about three quarters of that will go away. The other 10 will need because we'll keep using petroleum and gas to make chemicals and materials like plastics. It's also used as a coolant in electrical equipment and gas turbines.
