In 1476, another sculptor named Antonio Roslino was commissioned to take over the project. And he worked on the stone for a short time, but he didn't get very far until he too was dismissed from the project. So the giant lay undisturbed for the next 26 years,. exposed to the elements, hardening in the sun, becoming increasingly more brittle. Still, the unparalleled size of the slab and the investment that the city had made in procuring it caused it to remain a kind of asset in the minds of the people of Florence.
