In America we have gone from spending six billion dollars on jails and prisons in 1980 to 80 billion dollars last year. We're now taking money from education, health and human services so we can invest in jails and prisons largely to house hundreds of thousands of people who are there for drug addiction issues. I think a healthy just justice system would be seriously trying to grapple with the question how do we eliminate crime that's not even a question we ask in america How do you eliminate crime? If we were serious about that question we'd have a wildly different conversation than the one we were having.
