The Origins of Universities

i'm going to talk about the origins of universities, ok, of the particular first universities that blazed the trail. And then i'll talk about how universities have had to adjust over and over again through a series of crises when their authority has been challenged by outside forces. The university system is in another such crisis to day, where its prestige, its authority, its usefulness to society is radically in question. Some sort of paradime shift is going to have to happen if the university as an institution is going to persist into whatever sort of new civilization is coming next. O any influence is very indirect and diffuse. It was really a new, distinctive sort of institution that arose in the middle ages
