The film was terrible, but to me it was... I liked risk. Risk did not put me off. The fact that it was an odd, strange script, the likes of which I've never read, that all of that interested me. And so when Jim Cameron came along and built yet another kind of story for Ripley, I think that's what cemented her for people as a groundbreaking character.
