The Concept of Self-Ionization
There is some stable, what we call equilibrium, that the chemical system eventually tends towards. So an acid-base equilibrium will occur when you have weak acids and weak bases - they must always exist together. The dissociation constant is a measure of how much that original acid compound disassociates into its proton and conjugate base.
