Benetha's Story in Raisin and the Sun

The play is mostly set in Nigeria. The younger sister who we're talking in 1959 is very Afrocentric. She challenges every stereotype from religion to gender to culture. And I found myself really fascinated and drawn to her. So when I started thinking about writing the reply play, I went back to the character that I'm going to lead off with. We actually saw Benetha in the 1970s at a protest, student protest at an American university to create the Department of African American Studies. Why was that the place to start her story? I wanted to try and create a bridge.
