Schlimann's excavation did uncover something potentially remarkable. Near the bottom of his wet, flooded trench, he found the foundations of a huge ancient building. Given the location of his it's quite possible that he had found a piece of the old ptolemaic palace complex home to the great library. Perhaps in the 18 eighties, what was left of the great library could have been recovered. But unfortunately it was not. And given the expansion of the city of alexandria since that time, we may never get another chance to know what is buried beneath the streets of the busy city.
