Nettles and Applewhite jointly opened the Christian Art Center inside the first Unitarian Church of Houston. The center closed after only a few months. From there, they traveled to an unspecified location just outside of Houston in the Texas countryside. They met an occultist from the Philippines who offered them spiritual guidance. And he thus gave them new names.
