Dreams and the Early Western Esoteric Tradition

Artemidorus is writing in the 2nd century CE, probably. by which time the literary tradition of esoteric reading had at least a 600 year history if we want to mark its beginning with the Durveni papyrus. And Artemidorus has dovetailed dream interpretation fully onto that interpretation of textual esotericism. Dreams are quite literally esoteric messages. By such a formulation of esoteric authority in a set of canonical texts, we can both save the myths by making them secret philosophical texts. We can also implicitly assert our authority as a true elite by our ability to read the true secret meaning just like Joseph impressing the pharaoh with his interpretive powers.
