Cattle ranching had a long history in Mexico and especially in this far northern frontier zone of Mexico. The cattle handlers on these ranches were called vacaros, simply meaning cattlemen. And they basically had to learn the arts of cattle ranching from local Mexican people who had been doing it for centuries by this point using cattle descended from those brought over by the Spanish colonizers hundreds of years before.
