The title of your thesis is unsupervised learning of lexical information for language processing systems. So it was maybe learning the Japanese language that made you interested in NLP. That was definitely the turning point. And putting all of these things together kind of formed this in my mind near the third or fourth year of my PhD, where it was like, hey, we can use this mathematical tool of Bayesian non-parametrics to do word segmentation.
