The self is a perception, one consequence that suts another kind of controlled hallucination. What we perceive consciously is the brain's best guess of the causes of its sensory input. There are actually many different ways in which we experience being a self. The experience of being you is partly refracted through the minds of others. So i experience being me as partly defined by what i think you all are thinking about me.
