The History of the German Helmet in the First World War

I've often wondered about the development of the German helmet in the first World War. I've never managed to find anything on it. It looks like a helmet that's been designed with some thought. They stuck them all out on an artillery range once they devised them and simply bombarded them with artillery and saw which ones were least damaged. The shape as we just said was designed to cover as much of the head as possible but also it had to avoid your backpack so it could only go down a certain distance before you couldn't lie down and shoot at the enemy. So the length of the back of it was limited by the extension of your neck when you put your arms underneath you to fire
