"The future isn't what it used to be," Reagan said in a speech. "I have come to think that for years, I wondered what difference did it really make?" He says ordinary people who heard the speech and thought at some level: Maybe there could be a world without that wall. The idea that an American president comes and gives a speech was not a happy experience for West Germans during the Cold War.
