"We set up these grades as a barrier. There's almost a defense mechanism that they can't question our authority too much," she says. "How can we successfully engage or critically engage a subject matter if we cannot also critically engage how we're viewing and judging the success of that discussion?" The goal is not just to get them to be critical readers of grades as a system, it's about helping them be critical reader of systems period, he adds.
