Is America an Empire?

Tyranny comes home: The domestic fate of US militarism. This one uses the word empire quite liberally. And there are some people in the well I guess probably the whole American establishment would take offense at the use of the word empire and they would say the United States does not resemble the empires of the past. So how do you justify the use of that term?
