Families of the fishermen, knowing that the fleet was in trouble, had gathered on the sea wall. And one after another, they watched one ship after another being overturned by the swell or being smashed against the rocks. By day's end, when all became calm again, a total of 19 ships were gone. All a hundred and 89 fishermen lost their lives,. A hundred and 89, a hundred and 29 from eyemouth itself. The other 60 were from neighbouring locations, but all but all working out of eyemouth harbour.
