The pendulum of female modesty swings across history. Some countries are much more obsessed with it than others, and yet biology is pretty fixed. I think that there are other things I talk about in the book, but let's talk about three main things. The introduction of private property of ownership brings higher and higher levels of inequality so what you pass on can be of significance. And also, particularly if you've got high levels of inequality between men, it creates this competition between women for the richest husbands. These puritans make their comebacks in periods of rising inequality, rising population pressure and periods of warfare too.
