Utilitarianism and Selfish Gene Theory in Economics
Should we think of utilitarianism and selfish gene theory as the two sources of fuel for methodological individualism in economics? Yes, I think so. It's trying to recreate the world of physics. This bottom up, everything can be inferred from the atoms. And we know that's just wrong. Modern biology, modern social science, abandoning that view. There are big civil wars within all of these subjects. But I'm part of networks with fellows of the Royal Society that were written sort of really fancy hard science discipline. They are now seeing that you can't possibly build up from atoms, as it were, to infer macroeconomic phenomena like a society. If you want to understand behaviour in a
