Psychologists have spent a century trying to measure these things, and I think they do pretty well at it. For most of these traits, people differ in what we call the normal distribution,. That's this bell-shaped curve. The way we study variants involves methods from a century ago called the twin study. In families, nature and nurture runs together. So you can have birth parents who become schizophrenic later in life that relinquish kids for adoption. Those kids are adopted away in an adoptive home where the parents are unlikely to have schizophrenia.
