Schopenhauer thought that notions of will can help you to do at least biology, maybe not physics, but some kinds of science. He still does think that's what the whole vitalism and all this stuff is. Even talking about gravity, you're bringing in a notion of will, even if you're not using it as an explanatory piece of the causal puzzle. But when you get to these more complicated things, yes, there is an end in mind and it's the platonic form.
