He is widely believed to have been single-handly almost entirely responsible for we didn't have a World War III back in 1983. The Soviet Union had just mistaken a Korean passenger jet that was flight 7 for a spy plane and shot it down after it's straight into Siberian airspace. This could well have ended human civilization.
