The Great Napoleon Myth
In 1804, Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of the French in Notre Dame Cathedral. To justify this from a revolutionary perspective, Napoleon had to do some interesting logical backflips. The story goes that at the coronation, the plan had been for the Pope to place the crown on Napoleon's head. But he shocked both the Pope and the assembled crowd by whirling around,. grabbing the crown from the Pope's hands and then placing the crown on his own head.
