Dickens has done so much of the work for those filmmakers. It is intensely visual, but the characters too are so strongly marked. Bar Humbug has lifted itself out of the text really and become a kind of shorthand for a certain way of thinking about Christmas. Juliet finds Scrooge's redemption convincing within the story that we're being told. This is clearly not a realist story, so we're immersed in a certain dynamics. The room cracks and splinters as we move into the future. We have a kind of temporal acceleration in a kind of movie camera where the room expands in text to another place. You can see why it has worked so well in filmic adaptations.
