How Hong Kong turned to Twitter and Facebook during the pandemic

Inside China

CHAPTER

Introduction

Hong Kong's experience of the pandemic was just a little different to how it played out elsewhere these past three years. Elsewhere in the world social media was struggling to regulate the tsunami of misinformation, conspiracy and racism that was described as an infodemic by the WHO. But here in Hong Kong certain groups and certain people on Facebook and Twitter became known as trusted sources of information. There is one particular Facebook group which started out as a small online community aiming to support people stuck in quarantine isolation. In this episode you're going to hear about some of the people who took it upon themselves to use social media to help others.
