Is There a Lot of Luck in Science?
A colleague at Berkeley had evidence that bacteria had an adaptive immune system called crisper. But there was no experimental evidence for it, and so they started to work on it in my lab. I thought about it as a little entertainment project; then i went to a conference where i met emmanuel charpentier. And her laboratory was coming to crisper from a very different point of view than mine. Her lab was interested in bacteria that caused human disease. That crisper system turned out to be very effective at geno mediting later. Even ten years after we published our work, the molecule of choice for many who are just interested in using it as a geno Mediting tool.
