Is There a Lot of Luck in Science?

A colleague at Berkeley had evidence that bacteria had an adaptive immune system called crisper. But there was no experimental evidence for it, and so they started to work on it in my lab. And her laboratory was coming to crisper from a very different point of view than mine. Her lab was interested in bacteria that caused human disease.
