Do Not Give Way Relative to Your Desire
Do not give way relative to your desire has always confused me because that just seems like what, you know, utterly self-absorbed and hedonistic. For Lacan, he doesn't mean it's in fact the model of postponing desire on behalf of realistic compromises. In order to attain the greatest amount of pleasure, I have to calculate and economize, sacrificing short-term pleasures for the most intense long-term ones. The version of the pleasure being the long-term one is still a kind of hedonistic pursuit of it.
