Thoreau is the great American chronicler of the seasons. He wrote it for 24 years and he's just deeply attuned to his environment. The world is trying to distract him from what he's truly interested in which is his immediate environment. Thoreau has figured out how to pay attention to his local universe rather than whatever's going on right now.
