In Defense of the Boston Brahmin
The Good Ol Boyz Podcast
You're Walking in Boston Minding Your Own Business
Boston generally was radically against like censorship there was the exception though. If things were considered especially if it was for comic consumption or children or whatever if you had like really degrading or um kind of like sexually explicit stuff like that was often what triggered it. That was a Puritan thing that you don't think that it was not it was mostly the lower class Yankees and the Catholics and to the extent there was support from that.

that was a Puritan thing that you don't think that it was not it
Speaker 1
was mostly the lower class Yankees and the Catholics um to the extent there was support from that it Boston generally was radically against like censorship there was the exception though was um obscenity to some extent um if things were considered especially if it was like for comic consumption or like children or whatever if you had like really degrading or um kind of like sexually explicit stuff like that was often what triggered it but it wouldn't be just like we didn't like this idea or like it wasn't usually about like something silly it was usually something that was considered like just degrading in a way that was kind of there was no excuse for and um that was what they kind of demand
Speaker 2
have you seen uh viral video titled POV you're walking in Boston minding your own business i don't think so it's got millions of views there's like a uh a leftist is walking in Boston during the height of the lockdowns and he's walking past a bar and he's filming this and he's he's gonna make a video saying look at these people they're at a bar and we're supposed to be under the lockdown and um two boss two Bostonian gentlemen approach him and uh sounded south Bostonian didn't they yeah they i think they i mean they were they were clearly you know they all had Patriots gear on they were clearly lower lower class um but they uh they called him a pussy and was like oh you're gonna call your mother uh i don't know you you what by the way i mean by the way that why would i bring that up and that thing you were talking about earlier with the you know you you talking shit a lot which by the way i mean that's kind of right up our alley we're podcasters but that's not the most southern thing in the world especially that time period like you could just talk shit to people because they'd shoot you
Speaker 1
right so yeah that in that with the southern culture it wasn't i mean people it wasn't the people didn't say anything but you had more of a retaliation the honor culture was the um the i would say the parents had a different honor culture the way their honor culture was around the idea that that it was the right thing to do to always express yourself that was not an insult to express yourself it was not about other people so being tough enough to take that was part of what being was part of being honorable laws and like where they would have gotten angry would be if you tried to interfere with their does their ability to express themselves or call their motives into question would be more likely to prompt a response but they had kind of worked out a way to avoid you guys i guess there were so many priestly competitions and holding a spiral type things like they had a way of de-escalating and so for that reason they tended to be relatively classy in their um in their verbal like like emmerson type style like emmerson was somehow all this kind of classy in his provocativeness and outrageousness and um for the most part you know so he could it came across
Speaker 2
differently who's emerson
Speaker 1
who's emerson um the writer uh who's a brownie um that the rhetorical combativeness of the abolitionist and whatever was was on the class your side what you got then was the the culture was was of outrageous speech you the demeanious came in yeah i would say that that became that's part of what they internalized and so then you get like on one end selfie so that's what it looks like when you know it's a lot classy um but i don't think those are two different things like i think that right right
Speaker 2
they're giving some of that from those guys
Speaker 1
yeah and the bromins would not have i mean they would have said certain things were vulgar whatever but they wouldn't have they wouldn't have they were actually impressed by that level of the conference lonus speak out and be tough you know bobbly and to call that out i mean like i was not a fan of this covid response and i know that you know the bromins would have been like take off that the house could it just made up like i mean they would have they would have said it more nicely then the selfie guys like that attitude was real i mean you know they didn't wouldn't have any i had any more patience with it and um you know it is one of those like well since you know adam's is a john
