The Roman Empire and the Freedmen

During the republic, freedmen were restricted in what they could be and do once they were free. By the reign of claudius, most of those restrictions had been lifted. The old rule of client and patron still defined roman daily life. And a freedman naturally became the faithful client of his old master - further adding to that master's prestige.
