The Limitations of Historical Records in Scientific Practice
Historical records can't give you a way of checking some of the questions that you have. So it is also difficult to determine what socio-cultural resources are being drawn from and how they interact with their epistemic practices by looking at historical records. There's an aspect of cognitive science that is called, I call, environmental perspectives. Some people call it for e-cognition. Says that cognition is embodied, it's embedded, it's enculturated,. And it's distributed across humans and artifacts, cognitive processes. The hutchins quote says humans create their cognitive powers by creating the environment in which they exercise those powers.
