How Do You Differentiate Characters?

In my thriller series a, the main character is a retired soldier named john tyler. So he is the, it's all third person, but he is the viewpoint character most of the time. But you do have to work on those secondary characters so they can stand on their own as narrators and as characters people are going to care about if something happens to them. I think one of the big reasons for that is people like to solve the mystery along with the main character.
