Machiavelli: Censors were "the supreme arbiters of the manners and customs of the Romans" He says they helped to preserve liberty in Rome, so long as liberty existed there. The censors made sure that merchants weren't displaying their wealth too opulently. They would push actors to find a more respectable trade after a few years.
