A Newcomer to the Land of Enchantment
The house is backed by the corrupt territorial government, which is known as the santa fe ring. The sheriff is their man. They control the judicial system and the post office so they can read everyone's letters. And because it's pretty much the only game in town, basically all of lincoln county is in debt at the house's store. So there was a lot of hostility among settlers, both the poor white ranchers and the hispanics down in lincoln county toward the house.
