Introduction

Jin Lee's Cultural Foundations of Learning East and West is a really good book, says Stush. In the Eastern view it's about transformation of the self being the aim to some extent while in the Western view learning is about mastery of the world. Making the learner virtuous is the way of overcoming difficulties in learning or making learning more effective whereas making learning fun is the way to make learning more effective in a Western context. Respect for the teacher is valued in the East whereas challenging authority is valued inThe West. The importance of silence and listening is emphasized in the East but not so much in the West.
